New to group!:
Hi, I'm Leora from California. My father got into coin collections years before his untimely passing. He has left numerous collecting from walking liberty to Penny's. He did this without me, my sister and daughter even knowing. I feel the importance of continuing for me and especially my daughter. So my first question is probably a no brainer but to clean the coins just warm soap and water and soft toothbrush? One other is buffalo nickles are very hard to read, how does one distinguish? Thanks for being very personable on YouTube, nice change.

Hey . Welcome. Oh, don't clean them please if you want to sell . Never clean SILVER coins and Coppers are Questionable unless their dug coins. Please post pics to show what you mean if there are unsightly trouble areas.

Sorry i was rushed and did not read all of your post before.
Any action to a coin that removes surface metal (wiping with a facial tissue included b/c the tissues put small scratches) will ruin much of the value the coin has.
Post some pics and we can likely help you know what to do.
As to the nickel, a lot of buffaloes had the date wear off. The typical way to see the date is destructive, but a datelee byffalo is normally not worth anything anyway. A product named Nic-A-Date can be purchased and a drop put onto the nickel where the date is. I have heard putting it in vinegar for awhile will produce similar results but this would need researched bc I have not done it.

Yea, I've heard of that stuff . Does it really work. It seems the Buffalo Nickel is a tough coin to get good dates , I find the Standing Liberty is as well .

It works most of the time but it damages the coin forever, it's like acid etching.

Yes - the acid work. I speak from experience. But it also leaves a stained area on the coin. The concept is that the letters of the date were compressed into a tighter density when the coin was stamped. So the acid eats away the less dense metal surrounding where the numbers were.
There is a guy I have seen (yoube I think) who restores buffalo nickels with chemical etchant. These sell on eBay as restored nickels.
Standing Liberty quarters are silver. I do not know of anything specifically made that will bring out the date on these. While the acid would "eat" them, I am speculating the silver is "dissolved" too quickly for the date to show though (someone please correct me if they know for sure).
