Dear Community,
I have spent hours trying to figure out what this coin is. Originally I thought it was an 1883 Morgan silver dollar (no magnet sticks to it), but there is no denomination on the coin anywhere and I cannot find another like it anywhere on the internet, including the US Mints page. Notice the unusual (and beautiful) design on the reverse side of the coin. This coin has been in my father's possession since 1947 -- I just inherited it and a number of other coins as well including German, British, Canadian, and American all 19th century. I am hoping someone can tell me what this unusual coin is. Thanks so much. Hilary.

Re: Help identifying 1883 coin
It is an 1883 Morgan Dollar but someone engraved the coin after mint and wore it as a jewelry piece and that is why there's silver solder and damage on the front. Some would consider this a love token but usually they were made from smaller denominations like dimes.
Re: Help identifying 1883 coin
Thanks for the information, is the design on the reverse/back the engraving and if it is, how did they do it over the minting? Even under a magnifying glass it looks like the reverse side is the original. I'm guessing the silver solder on the obverse had a pin on it and the reverse side was the side that was displayed?
Thanks again for your help.
Thanks again for your help.

beautiful piece. this reverse 'pattern' looks like someones "INITIALS" to me.
if you 'weigh' the coin, you will find it 'under-weight', as this 'design', was 'carved into' the original reverse ....
the 'splotches', or 'extra metal' you see on the obverse are where the 'pin' was attached (solder)
:eureka:
so i say jewelry, most likely a 'lapel pin' or a 'broach'
