Hey, found my way here probably the same way most people do.....so on to the important stuff
Can anyone explain what’s going on with this cent coin?
So much happening and i havent been able to locate anything quite similar online. All I can make out are surface pitting type defects but can’t tell if I’m seeing random digits in some of the pits or what the random mark is over the “T” in trust.
Any thoughts are much appreciated It weighs 2g
Thanks!

Re: Another Newby with Questions
The coin is cleaned and has corroded, someone broke open the plating bubbles and exposed the zinc planchet. I did a video on one and eventually this one will develop holes in it.

Re: Another Newby with Questions
That was one of my assumptions, thanks so much!
So, speaking of cleaning,i know cleaning is frowned upon, but what is the best method one can do to look at a coin found covered
in some unknown substance, say wax or gum? Or am I the only person who wonders what that coin could be?
Don’t worry i have other coins with questions for my curious mind.
Thanks again

Re: Another Newby with Questions
A soak in pure acetone will usually remove gunk without damage to the coin.
If it is sand or mineral buildup, like from metal detecting, I have had limited success with hydrogen peroxide (3-5%)

Re: Another Newby with Questions
Thank you so much! Very good to know!
The times I couldn’t identify between a penny or a dime and couldnt let it go, I used a vinegar solution.
Next time will try acetone.
