I have a 2011 Olympic Quarter that is missing the "L" from Liberty. Looking for any info about it. Thanks.

We need images to better help you, although missing letters is common on modern coins when they're struck through a grease filled die. You also have counter wheel damage that can cause this as well.

I see the L, but not as distinct. I think Daniel got it... Struck through grease.

here again is another example of "image attribution" from a single straight on picture,.....
...in a category that can have several different actual diagnosis.

using the term "STRUCK THROUGH" alone is a 'sweeping generalization', & i hugeeyes this ALL THE TIME
..... the 'ol stand-by is "GREASE"
..... my favorite are the 'certified' struk thru coinage ...

..... struk thru WHAT ?? :dunno
... some magic unicorn dust?
... uncle bob's old shoe-lace?
... how about an old piece of sky-lab?
notice how a majority of the time the "LABEL" does not tell you ??

:eureka:
'missing details' on a coin might be from:
a grease / goop filled die,.....
die wear / fatigue,.....
over-polishing,.....
light die-plugging,.....
so on,...... all part of the NORMAL COIN MAKING PROCESS !!

determining the difference here, takes a bit of experience, a HIGH POWER CLOSE-UP MICROSCOPE, ... & being able to see the example FIRST HAND.

JUST MY gotcoins:

hugeeyes at these 2 pics, can you determine what's going on here ??

I hear you Paul, but...

I didn't see indication of polish marks and the letter immediately adjacent had great detail, so I ruled out Over-polish and Die Fatigue. In hand, would always be better. Grease just seemed to stick... pun intended.

Typically when a letter is completely missing from a coin it is either accidentally removed from the die by a mint employee while removing clash marks or it becomes filled with their polishing compound (grease), and clogs the die cavity, thus preventing the letter or number from being struck.

If it was mechanical and after mint then it would still be there but the metal would be smashed and moved away. We know the mint didn't leave the L off the die, and the rest of the letters are struck normally, there's is some slight abrasion in this area but not enough metal movement for removing the L. So there's only one conclusion to be drawn in this instance. The die cavity had to be clogged and prevented the L from being struck.
