Re: 1999 connecticut error quarter
This is not a mint error but a hand punch was used to counter stamp a phallus symbol on the coin. Wouldn't be one of a kind either, if one was created then it was used on other coins as well, you just haven't found more yet.

Re: 1999 connecticut error quarter
Why would the reverse be concave in also, and it appears to have cursive writing in it, it is not the branches of the tree and if it was punched from the front side wouldent it push or bend the reverse out,? Bare with my silly thoughts, but ive done my share of punching of metal
Re: 1999 connecticut error quarter
Also if it were hand punched would you see parts of the word united somewhere the U and part of the N are not visable,? They simply are gone, i would think they should be seen somehow, ?
Re: 1999 connecticut error quarter
And if i think about the light source it would have been more like 1 oclock and from above the coin

Re: 1999 connecticut error quarter
It appears there was some writing on the punch that didn't wasn't rendered well. I have seen my share of counter stamped coins and it's not the same as punching a sheet of metal. The dynamics are different.
Here's but a few counter stamped coins that I have acquired over the years.

Re: 1999 connecticut error quarter
... the reason i asked, was to determine if this area was incuse, or protruding out from the coin.
are you able to 'read what is inscribed' inside the area on the reverse ?
.... is the lettering 'mirror backwards' ??

Re: 1999 connecticut error quarter
Not if they had a two part punch that sandwiched the coin in between. Seems that would work wonders with minimal effort on the perps part.

Hi all and thank all of you for helping me understand what this my be, PALH1, the reverse side with lettering would be incuse, and same on the front side both go inward, i will try and and see if i can make out what it says, and also try a better pic for you, thanks again, im learning
Re: 1999 connecticut error quarter
Hi Danial, thanks for the pics, i see what your talking about, and understand what your saying, but it id definitely different from those two coins, i am for giggles going to take it to a coin dealer here in oregon, Bartons rare coins, and see if he can make out the writing on the reverse, thanks for your patience Don,

Re: 1999 connecticut error quarter
They're all different unless they're struck with the same punch, just know this didn't happen at the mint, that's 100% factual.
