197? Lincoln Penny

#1 Unread post by Melissajo67 »

Hello, I am new to this site and still learning. I have been collecting coins all my life and enjoy looking at the old, new and all different types. I have a Lincoln penny that I am trying to get some information on and would like some help. The front looks like a struck through coin and the back looks fine. Has anyone every seen one like this? Would it be worth getting it certified?

Struck through late stage die cap and some will tell you it is a brokage.

No I don’t have the weight but I can try tomorrow to get it weighed. Is that important to know the weight?

Welcome and interesting coin.
I think the weight helps determine the source of the anomaly by ruling out acid or other caustic substance eating away at the obverse.

Struck Through Capped Die

I would say the reason it looks so distorted is that the coin was struck more than once and all mint errors are unique so they it's not going to look exactly like images you find from other sources. I can also see cupping of the rim on this coin.

I don't see a brockage either, centered or otherwise, but there's several who think they're in the know going around calling this a brockage. I know it was struck by another coin but that coin was stuck on the die and was in late stage capped die.

It does have some cupping or at least it appears to be and seems like it was struck more than once by the capped die and each strike it rotated slightly causing all the distortion.
