So I started to be interested a couple of weeks ago and Friday I bought a box of pennies - I have a digital magnifying camera coming Monday - I would love some pointers on where to start. I found a 1904 penny!! I was excited

Most cents are common and not worth but a few cents, steel cents in circulated are about 20 cents each, the 1904 is around a dollar or two. So I think you should by a Lincoln Cent and Indian Cent albums and try to fill them up for the fun of discovery. During your search for dates you can look for doubled dies and such.
