Total novice in search of info...

#1 Unread post by chadh1966 » Mon May 29, 2017 7:44 pm

Hello, my name is Chad. I am not really a collector, but I do go through my change looking for the rare silver coin. I recently found a 1977 quarter, that I think is a broadstrike. See the pics. It really stood out, as the edge is completely smooth. The rim appears to be a little taller than normal. No other defects, to my very untrained eye. I was wondering if anyone could me clue me in if this looks like a legitimate defect, and if it has any collectible value?

Thanks in advance for your input.

A broadstrike occurs when the collar does not contain the coin and results in an overexpansion of the edge.

This coin was either filed down or tapped down. "Filed" is generic for any process that removed metal, so it could be as simple as rubbing it on concrete to smooth it out. "Tapped" or spooned is a method used to reshape the metal into a ring. (Otherwise known as a "dryer coin".)

Either way, it is considered post-mint damage.

Thanks. It just grabbed my attention, so I thought I would check on it.

I agree, the edge has been messed with but anyway welcome to the forum.
