newbie looking for opinion on a 2017 dime

#1 Unread post by simple0426 »

Hi everyone.

Just looking for feedback regarding this 2017 dime I have.
Is this considered a double die?

Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the forum.
Unfortunately this coin was NOT struck by a doubled die. The duplication of the devices you have pointed to are what is known as mechanical or machine doubling (MD). MD is made by metal flow, planchet movement or die movement during the minting process.
A double die obverse or reverse is a coin planchet struck a single time by a coin die that has the doubling created on it during the production of the die. Each time the die strikes a blank planchet there is the same doubling that is created exactly the same each time.
With MD, the duplication of some elements of the design will change from strike to strike and is actually considered by most to be a type of damage.
Hope this helps and thanks for posting.

I agree it's MD.
