2003 Missouri quarter broadstrike error?
Hello,
I'm new to this site, but have a question. I found a 2003 Missouri quarter that looks odd. It looks
like it has a smooth, rounded edge and the reverse stamp looks like the metal folded over, covering the
top half of the state name. I haven't been able to find a similar error quite like this one. Anyone have
any ideas? I haven't even been able to find any Missouri broadstrike errors online. Thanks

Looks like someone used a cutting wheel on a rotary tool to do this.

I don't think so. It looks to me like the "Missouri" may be stamped over the raised metal.Daniel wrote:Looks like someone used a cutting wheel on a rotary tool to do this.
The quarter is also, just a bit, larger in diameter I believe.

The coin was struck with a die and a die would not create this during the strike. The methods of punching out the planchet, annealing and upsetting do not result in a planchet looking like this, so no where during the minting process can this occur.
Not even a partial collar strike looks like this.
Here's an example of what extra metal would look like on a coin's edge http://coinauctionshelp.com/extra_metal_mint_error.html

A couple of things: 1. Why would someone "machine" this just to throw it into circulation? 2. It still looks like some of the "Missouri" lettering is still visible in spite of the metal over it. I am posting some extra and closer pictures for further evaluation:

Personally, what I see is the coin was encased in a metal ring, such as a locket, for display. Over time, this forced the rim to move metal creating a metal ridge.
As to why would someone machine a coin...
People do strange things to coins. We see it all the time. Whether for novelty or fraud, it's still a damaged coin.

I don't know how many times people ask "Why would someone do this?" and it's because they can. No one needs a good reason and coins can end up in circulation on purpose or accident or just by circumstance. I have seen just about everything done to a coin, but if it can't happen during them minting process then it's been done by a person no matter how silly or unlikely.
