Coin Collecting- hobby or investment?

#1 Unread post by tab1962 »

After working with a coin dealer for a full day I learn that a lot of people think collecting coins is an investment which I found out isn't always the case. The buyer has to be extremely educated and know exactly what they are looking for especially with 'Raw' coins. And many collectors forget that a dealer has to make a profit. I watch, first hand, a dealer pay $70 for a coin that showed $89 on the gray sheet. The dealer explain to me that they need this built in profit to live on. So the majority of the folks get around 70 to 75% of the coin value stated in most prices. It was an eye opener for me today after working in the shop a full day...

It's both, but some just collect to leave to their children or grandchildren and others just buy and sell.

Hi, although I'm not good in sorting out coin currencies, I believe that it is both an investment and a hobby. Coins has a money worth aside from its intrinsic value.
