New York based newbie here, with some coins that were probably my grandfather's, mostly likely of no value, but a few gold coins I've been puzzling over, like a 1899 $5 gold Liberty coin and a 1900 Austrain 4-ducat coin. I suppose I should post about those in the specific forums.
It's hard to find actual people - the coin clubs seem to be very forbidding, hidden, exclusive. The ones I've tried to reach have mostly been dismissive. Which is weird, because with most clubs, they tend to be very welcoming with, "Oh, do come to our next meeting!" I gather they're cautious for fear of an army of robbers descending on them, but it's bizarre to me to have such a closed society.
Anyway, I've been trying to do a little research, hoping for places to maybe post a couple of coins for sale, or get recommendations.

Re: Floundering newbie puzzling over some coins
Thank you for your nice welcome.
Unfortunately, I'm totally non-tech, and not able to take pictures, much less post them. I'll do my best to try to explain my questions in words. Which isn't always easy, because I don't necessarily know the lingo.
It's been an uphill battle, as I keep hoping I can sell directly to collectors, which is proving harder than I thought. It's interesting - it has occurred to me that the way dealers make offers is very close to what would be considered illegal price-fixing in some fields.

Re: Floundering newbie puzzling over some coins
No one will buy a raw coin from an "unknown" seller without a proper image, or from a person who wants retail. Retail is what a dealer MIGHT get from their loyal clientele and the price guides only reflect the large dealer sells, large coin auctions and coin show sells, but that only accounts for a small fraction of coin sells. So a price guide is just a guide and is not the bible on a coin's value.
$300 is a fair price for your coin, from a dealer, and I don't know what price guide you're looking at, but from what you're saying you don't understand coin values and you don't know how to grade coins well. But you're expecting high retail for your coins; it's not going to happen, not even I can have the same expectations.
A cheap digital camera, set in macro mode and held steady with a $5 tripod is less technological than joining and posting in this forum.
It seems you blame certain dealers and coin clubs but it's what you're expecting out of your coins is the problem. We have no idea if they're even authentic, so you must be realistic, learn to id fakes, and learn to grade coins and learn their values.
We would all love a fortune but that's not realistic. Here's my website http://coinauctionshelp.com/
Search the grading images and then look at the values, then visit ebay and look at the sold auctions and get an idea of what your coin is selling for at large. Just don't go by the red book or coin values magazine or coin world, way high on retail in those publications.
