NEWBIE NEEDS ADVICE

#1 Unread post by joanna.holly »

Hi! I have been blessed with my deceased father's boxes of commemorative coins, mint sets, proof sets and ??? Dad hid his obsession for coins from my mother and really didn't talk about what he has collected. I know nothing about coins except as a kid I collected "lead pennies". So, I would appreciate suggestions on where to start. Reading suggestions? Video? Website? I need beginner stuff.

An immediate concern is that my Dad took his sets out of the cardboard boxes so he could put them into his safety deposit box. Should I try to match the plastic trays to the right box? Will the outer box add that much value to the coins? I'd like to just toss them if possible. Where does the rest of the world store coins? They are so very heavy...I have an entire suitcase filled & I can't lift it. HELP!!!

Hello and welcome. Sorry for the loss of your father.
We have had some recent members who had the same "dilemma" with inheriting a collection. It can be daunting but they took it slowly and used this site as an ongoing resource to help sort through conflicting information they found on the web. They also seemed to enjoy the experience of learning about the coins as well as connecting with their family members through the hobby. This site has a lot of information available about different types of coins and Ebay can give you and idea about the price things actually sell for, not just the asking price.
As you sort through the collection, you can organize the different types into smaller plastic containers that are more manageable. The added benefit is just getting familiar with what he had collected.
Just curious if you plan on ultimately selling the items or if you are gaining an interest in collecting and want to organize it?
To answer your question about the original mint boxes, yes it helps the value if you keep it together. Even the shipping information can help a collector, for some items, determine what time of year an item was shipped and therefore might contain a more valuable variety.
We look forward to helping and sharing in your discoveries!

:welcome:

You've found an awesome resource by coming to this site!
Just as a side note, if you have specific coin questions, a photo of the coin in question (both sides) is extremely useful for us to be able to give you accurate answers. Posting photos is fairly simply by using the Attachment tab below this text box when replying to a thread by using the Full Editor mode, or when generating a new thread.

We look forward to helping you through your coins. Please accept our deepest sympathies on your loss.

I would organize them by denomination then type. You can then look through them for date and mint mark rarities and post images and questions in this forum for help as you go. I have a few links in the menu bar to help you with values, grading and such.

So welcome to the forum and you can never ask a dumb question or too many questions. I promise that!
