Oil Spill or Copper Rainbow

#1 Unread post by Martii101 »

I have a 1900 Morgan Silver dollar that has a copper-ish rainbow. Could this coin have been oiled? or should I attempt to clean this coin?

It is artificially toned but you shouldn't clean the coin. Welcome to the forum!

Does an artificially toned coin loose collectible value? (that is, if it had collectible value)? Wouldn't a good silver cleaner be of use here, since the coin is 90% silver? This may seem like a dumb question, but I don't understand the reason. I've used Hagerty Silver Clean with some success in other situations. Is this recommended?

I saw a dealer dip a dollar that had ugly black toning. He dipped it quickly in a solution and put the coin under running water. The coin came back ms65, from NGC. I think you better not use that cleaner you spoke of. It might contain an abrasive.

The worry is if the coin has cleaned lines hiding behind this toning. If it does then you dip it then they will be obvious and that will lower the value of your coin. You can dip coins in certain situations but sometimes that toning comes back over time anyway.
