i see what looks like a 'backwards E' below lincolns bust.
if you hold the coin up to a mirror, can you make out any wording?
maybe a 'five' from a buff nickel?

It's after mint damage, maybe someone might have laid a Buffalo Nickel on top of this cent and hit it with a hammer or squeezed it in a vice.

Yes its definitely the word five but that wouldn't explain the markings on the reverse ,as if if was caught between two die stamps (that someone did it in a vise)

I am positive it's post mint damage and more than two coins could have been used or the other coin could have been squeezed against it on one side then on the other. It's definitely consistent with a vice job.

I can clearly make out portions of "FIVE CEN" in reverse on the obverse of the penny.

As Daniel states, this is PMD. If it were mint damage, the FIVE CENTS would be frontwards. Hard to tell from the photo, but the letters appear to be incuse, or pressed into the coin. This again tells you it is PMD.
