1942 "Mercury" Head dime mint error

#1 Unread post by kesc » Thu Nov 20, 2014 5:01 pm

hello, im new to the forum and fairly new to coin collecting. my father was into mint error coins and he has a 1942 "Mercury" Head dime that appears to have some piece of foreign metal stamped into the center of the reverse side of the coin. the object does not deform or poke through the obverse side of the coin. it also appears to be integrated with the silver of the coin itself as if the object was present when the coin was struck. any body have thoughts on the coin? when I figure out how to download pictures I will try to post some. I have tried to discuss mint error coins with the local dealers and they just look at me like no such thing exists. so I have come here in hopes of finding someone knowledgeable. thanks.

It sounds like it's been soldered. I had one dime that looked like this but I sold it as scrap. I do have some images of cents with solder http://coinauctionshelp.com/soldered_coins.html

To post a image just scroll down to filename, click choose file, box pops up, choose image you want, let it load then click ad file then the submit button.

yea, we need pics please...
both front & back

:eureka:
keep in mind...older coins were often 'made into' buttons....with small "bales", or 'loops' or 'hoops' soldered on the reverses....but we need a pic to make sure.
