nice grab.....
teen's & 20's lam errors ARE NOT that common.
'44-'46 are REAL COMMON....
:greatfind:

:eureka:
this is why you see some lams, with even a smaller amount of surface lam, sell for much different/higher prices....it's the 'date period' of the coin

So I understand how this happens with clad coins. What is happening here with a solid copper coin?

If there is any foreign matter(dirt, string, wire, dust, metal chips) on a coin or the dies it can become part of the final product, temporarily. Many times, it happens that the foreign matter does not really adhere, so a chunk that was laminated to the coin breaks off. The metal can be copper, gold, silver or clad, it peels off none the less. Sometimes the foreign matter will remain, but not usually.

Cool. So how is this different from a strike thru? In that the material adheres to the coin?

The differnce with a strike through is that it occurs when foreign objects fall between die and planchet during striking.
Pieces of cloth, metal fragments, wire, slivers of reeding, grease, oil, dirt, wire bristles (from wire brushes used to clean dies, resembling staples), die covers and other objects may fall between the dies and the coin.

A lamination or peel occurs when there is some sort of impurity in the metal of the coin planchet just below the outside layer of the coin. This impurity stops all of the metal in the coin bonding together correctly. Because the layer of impurity in coin is just below the surface the thin layer of metal between it and the surface can become either partially or totally detached from the rest of the coin.

I should have added that gases in the planchet can cause a lamination peel. Any impurity can cause this lamination, but a great example of a struck through is the 1922 no D, that could have been caused by grease on the obverse die blocking the mint mark.
