Continental Currency?

#1 Unread post by PaMays81 »

My brother-in-law found this coin in a jar and was curious if it was authentic. It looks like someone's done an acid test on it, but other than that, there isn't "copy" stamped on it (which is about as far as my expertise on the subject goes), so any thoughts as to authenticity would be wonderful. It weighs right at 25.0 grams, if that's helpful.

are their any markings, or anything stamped, on the "OUTER RIM" (the flat outside area) ??

if, i remember correctly (i'm gett'n old ya know)..... the word "currency", something to do with 1 or 2 "R's", & the "spacing" of the lettering...was the initial "check point" here.... :dunno

You know, I never noticed there was only one 'r' in currency until you pointed it out...I did some informal research on mindfulness/mindlessness a few months back, and long story short, I guess I must have been functioning on auto-pilot. ;) Back to the coin...my brother-in-law didn't take the best picture, but if I am remembering correctly, it had a line around the middle as if the two sides were pressed together (gotta love my technical, coin savvy, jargon).

Thanks for the input and the welcome. I love this site, I've just never had anything to post!

i boought a 'copy coin' of this 4? years ago'ish....just because it is a "landmark" coin. i did look at a large number of these first. i chose a "BECKER" brand (stamped on outer rim), as it was an excellent copy. $18

Welcome to the forum and your first post!

The coin in question is not authentic, sorry to say, there's more copies than the real thing out there. The line around the rim is proof it's a cast version.

Could be pewter or have some lead so i would be careful handling the coin.

Thanks so much for the input guys! I'm sure it's not the answer he wanted, in fact I'm positive, but it's better to know than not. I've never found ignorance to be bliss!

Love this site and thanks again!
