Classic Machine Doubling Damage

#1 Unread post by Steven_B »

Posting an example of Machine Doubling Damage to a 1968S. Fairly strong shelflike doubling.

Nice images and example, but oohh... you called it "damage" widegrin

We've had plenty of discussions on this one.

Yes it is hard to know what to call this from forum to forum. Many have gone from Strike Doubling to Machine Doubling Damage then to Machine Doubling. Get a bit confusing when the defining terminology keeps changing. I have noticed most are now going with Machine Doubling or just MD.

I think it's a growing trend to call this Machine Doubling. I know that it happens because of a loose die and when it restracts it scrapes the sides of the devices. Technically that's damage but no more so than other mint errors like a Capped Die, now those are massive damaged coins.

That is a nice specimen of MD and a great one to keep for reference and to show others what MD looks like compared to a DD. Sometimes those MD coins look pretty cool and are worth keeping, no premium mind you, but just cool.
