1972 D odd E

I found this rather interesting and wondered how this cold happen. With damage on both sides of the vertical bar on the E in WE and if you look at the D in God you can see a bit there. Just curious if you guys know how something like this may have happened.

I could be die deterioration or strike doubling of some kind. Nice images though.

I think Daniel is right on deterioration doubling...and that explains how it is on different side of the letter.
