1982 P die cracks on on reverse
Found this one this evening while finishing he zincs from the most recent bank box. It looks like the die was shattered as there are cracks just about everywhere on the coin. Just sort of interesting to me. I am not having much luck finding anything, mostly damaged coins and lots of my favorite MD. I may even post a picture of the MD's just to post something. :l

That die should have been retired about 6 months before they got rid of it .

The die was polished, not the coin, sorry. I was referring to the area under ST in STATES. Part of the E is missing as well.pahwa wrote:Hey Daniel where does it look polished?

Looks very similar to the polishing on my 1983 DDR....and it is very common on the 80's cents...they polished and overused the dies a lot...also there were a lot of clashes back then.

I understand now. I am glad there aren't any knowledge type tests on this stuff in here. :lDaniel wrote:The die was polished, not the coin, sorry. I was referring to the area under ST in STATES. Part of the E is missing as well.pahwa wrote:Hey Daniel where does it look polished?

Re: 1982 P die cracks on on reverse
I too have seen this a lot on these 80's zincs. I thought it was some sort of wear on the coin and not repairs to the die. I may get this stuff figured out in the next 8 or 10 years. widegrin But then again....Maineman750 wrote:Looks very similar to the polishing on my 1983 DDR....and it is very common on the 80's cents...they polished and overused the dies a lot...also there were a lot of clashes back then.

Pahwa, most polishing is done because of dies clashes where the dies came together without a planchet between them. The mint workers then polish them to remove clashes but often leave the scratches you see.

The scratches can be overwhelming sometimes. I wonder when they anneal the dies to work on them if sometimes they get them too soft and it doesn't take as much to damage the die when repairing. Some coins seem to be just covered with scratches from the dies.
Thanks for the info.
