1999 P New Jersey experimental quarter?

#1 Unread post by LWH36 »

I found this quarter today. It is thicker than a regular state quarter and has a very sharp edge. It makes a lower sound when bounced on a table.
Is it an error worth anything?

My guess is that you found a silver, impaired proof. Check the weight and see if it weighs 6.3 grams, the clad will only weigh 5.7 grams.

It is philadelphia mint, though. Aren't silver proofs from san francisco?

I failed to notice that and the answers no. All proofs are S mint. If it weighs silver weight then I would have it checked out, there are coins struck on the wrong planchet. I am not saying this is it, but it doesn't appear to have a copper core.

I will add that sometimes as a mean trick I've heard of people painting the side of a coin to make it appear silver. Definitely check the weight.

Agree with Daniel, weigh it.It wouldn't hurt to measure the thickness either...if you have a pair of calipers laying around.

This is quite interesting. Sounds different when dropped, from the pic it looks larger in thickness and dia. If indeed the coin has been struck on a different planchet I take it that would increase the value some. It will be interesting to see the weight of the coin.

wrong planchet coins are known for the first year of the state quarters including N.J. PA. and the others (Delaware? New York?) from the very first year.

I think there are also experimental planchets known too.I dont collect quarters (other than DDO and DDR type coins) so I am not up on it that much.

I dont know how to ID one so google around and see what you come up with.
