1861 gold coin - 2 1/2 dollar

#1 Unread post by mas_pdx »

Hi,

This is my first posting. I'm curious if anyone has views on this 2 1/2 dollar gold coin from 1861. From what I understand there were two different reverses for several years (1859-1861). The challenge is the differences are quite minor, mainly having to do with the shape of the arrows, the number "2 1/2" and the eagle's claws. The reverses are known as Type 1 (old reverse) and Type 2 (new reverse). Can anyone provide insight on whether the coin in the below photos is a Type 1 or a Type 2?

Thank you.

Kind regards

Michael

Gordon Wrubel: Quickfinder Notes: There is a simple way to distinguish the New Reverse from the Old Reverse die. Just look at the "O" in "OF". The New Reverse has a ROUND "O", while the Old Reverse has an OVAL "O". The San Francisco branch mint issue (none were issued at Charlotte or Dahlonega in 1861) bears the Old Reverse. While scarce in its own right, the 1861 New Reverse is far more plentiful in numismatic circulation than the Old Reverse.

No I would not recommend sending it in to a grading service most of these, even when graded, don't bring much more than melt.
