1980 Susan B Anthony

#1 Unread post by Robertkibbey »

Hi,

I would not really consider myself a coin collector but more of a collector of older and odder things. I really have no idea about error coins other than what I’ve recently read online. Anyway, night I was cleaning up I came across this coin and something just looked odd about it. I looked a little closer and took a few photos and it’s definitely not like any coins I’ve ever noticed before. It looks like it was struck multiple times but it also looks like it has two different size letters and in a couple of the photos it looks to me like a walking liberty design. I’m attaching a few pics and I highlighted just a few of the anomalies I noticed in one so you can tell what I’m talking about. I’m not sure if this is anything of any significance but anything you have to offer on the subject would be appreciated.

:welcome:

:eureka:
the last year they made "Walking Liberties" was in 1947, and that was on the
half-dollar ......... so I don't think it's possible they have an SBA with the walking liberty on it.

 I think what you're seeing are 'well-placed' contact marks.

As for the different size lettering, your eyes just may be playing tricks on you.................

I cant tell very well from the pics posted but wouldnt a die clash make a lot more sense and the marks hes seeing being the reverse design?
When the dies come together without anything betwern them they will each leave an imprint of their design on the other. So then the next coin struck may show some areas imprinted with imprints of the reverse side on them. You must remember the design will be reversed, so looking at the obverse( heads) marks you would see will be of the reverse but upside down and opposite concave or convex. It can be a bit confusing matching up the marks because of this at first
So I could be totally wrong as to this being what you have but would make sense to me and be easy enough to figure out if you know to look for this.......
My 2 cents anyway....lol....but def nothing to do with a walker.....good luck and great find if it is a clash

Thank you both for your replies. This was driving me crazy trying to figure out exactly what I was seeing. Jsul7789, I believe you are correct and this is what happened. As I said, I’m by no means an expert. I got creative with some light filters and took a few more photos and it’s much more obvious. It does, however, look like in addition to the die clash it was also struck twice. I’m posting a few more pics which I hope might be more clear to the expert eyes in here. Does this give it any additional value? If so. Guesstimates on anyone’s part? Let me know what you guys think after looking at these pics. Thanks again for sharing some of your expertise, her eye was really starting to creep me out.

:eureka:
keep in mind, that "clashing" will usually be seen in the "fields" of a coin.....................
it is uncommon to see any clashing on a "device".
.......Remember that devices (the bust of Susan here) are "incuse" on the die itself.

I’m not sure exactly what she had to eat has anything to do with it. Lol, j/k... so what is going on with this coin? I am clueless really and now curious more than anything.

May or may not be a clash but was an idea. If you go to Mad die clashes.com, theres a lot of good info there as well as overlays to help match up designs. Could still just be contact marks though. I honestly am having a tough time seeing much on the pics. Check that site out...lot of good info!!

Could be a clash with some contact marks mixed in. Why jump to lofty conclusions and impossible conclusions about being struck with a half dollar? Be realistic in your searches and rule out things instead of trying to make them some great discovery before an expert examines your coin.
