198x strike through?

#1 Unread post by huniad »

I bought this coin of a major online auction site, Is it real? The person selling claims it is a strike though grease. I am worried about the parallel marks the look like abrasions. Are those man made? Any thoughts?

It is struck through grease and these are die lines from the mint employee who didn't do a very good job of refinishing or cleaning the die afterward.

I'll bet a 1983.
That coin had major polishing issues.

One thing I forgot to mention. The weight is correct. It is 2.5 grams. If it is fake, man made shouldn't it be lighter because the material that was removed?

It's not fake but that weight is within mint specifications.
