Hi,
Just checking if this is within the tolerance weight for a Bronze penny. Where can I find the acceptable weights for US coins? Or is there a + and - percentage for the ranges?
Thank You
1973 D penny weighs 3.48 grams

Re: 1973 D penny weighs 3.48 grams
May I ask, when was the last time you calibrated your scale please?
whistling2:
Mint specifications here are 3.1100 g
so that puts you at 89.36%
:eureka:
You can usually check any of the TPG sites for mint specifications.

I check my scales all the time. Everything else weighs correctly.. I have reset scales 3 times and it comes up the same weight every time. I will check the sites. On one of the coin sites someone said there is a coin book that tells the tolerance for each coin but h can not remember the name of the book.
Thank you
Thank you

The thing is a little over-weight cent could be struck on a extra thick planchet but even graded these don't bring much money at all. I just look for years that are known or it's possible a foreign planchet could have got into the mix or if it doesn't weigh the same a known planchet of another denomination I don't worry about it.

3.48/3.11 = 1.12% over weight if I did the math correctly.
Hard to resist an interesting idea so I followed up on Daniels thought about US produced coins or planchets for foreign countries. I could find nothing that would fit the parameters. (Denver, 1970 -1973, +-4 grams, less than 19.09 mm.
I looked at Brazil, Costa Rica, San Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, Panama, Phillipines, Taiwan and some others. Looked for anything on the list produced 1970 to 1973 that would be the same weight or 19 mm or less and produced in Denver. Nothing fit the bill.
Definitely seems like it would be the rolled thick stock like Daniel thought.
