1964 US nickel mint stamp D that weighs 5.138 grams

#1 Unread post by Belbivdavini »

Hi, name is Michael and I’ve been collecting coins off and on since I was a kid. I was recently weighing some blank pennies to get an idea what year they were from. I always throw a nickel on my scale just to see if uu need to recalibrate it and I put a 1964 nickel w/D mint mark and it weighed 5.183 grams. I thought my scale might be off so I weighed several othI’mer nickels weighing 5 grams or slightly less due to being in circulation. I recalibrated my scale justbto be safe and I got the exact weight at 5.183 grams. I searched all over online and haven’t been able to find ay info on this happening before. Does anyone know if this is a rare accurance, or is this just a normal flaw?

:welcome:

I'm not sure if I understand you correctly, are you talking about the coin or the scale.

I’m talking about the coin itself. It weighs 5.183 grams and I wanted to know if that was common for a 1964 us nickel that has been in circulation.

It's overweight a bit but in this condition and appearance it's not on a foreign planchet and would not be worth grading. Wouldn't add much value.

The tolerance for a nickel after 1942 is 5.00g +/- 0.194g.

Yours is within tolerance.
