This is what's called a "lam error", or lamination error.
These "split lifting lams", are pretty cool with their big.

... Slight added value here...... JMO

If I remember correctly, they are caused from improperly mixing the metal alloy (similar to "woodies").

Improper mixing can cause improper bonding and can allow different "layers" to separate and start to peel or flake away. Some peeling laminations are pretty extreme.
