1984 strike error?
Im just wondering if anyone knows if this 1984 Lincoln penny looks odd, i noticed that it looks like it has a strike error and makes the penny look concaved like a bowl around the rim and is more noticeable on the right side but it is all the way around on closer inspection with a magnifying glass, i cant seem to find any more like it online so im curious to know if it might be a mint error or not.

I think what you might be seeing is what's called die fracture / die deterioration.
This is actually a very common occurrence.

Re: 1984 strike error?
.... Keep in mind that mint marks are extremely tricky!
:eureka:
And if there is an indentation on the coin, the die would have a protrusion in that area.
I don't see any added value here... JMO

Re: 1984 strike error?
Fair enough! thank you for the information, I have a bunch of pennies that i am taking the time to individually look at as i have a few that stand out more than the rest im just trying to hold back on posting them until i find more information that leads me to believe they would be worth looking into. So far i have found alot of useful information on this forum and i look forward to being a regular here, in recent finds i have found a couple i feel should be looked at and take the time to examine, Included in these pennies is the 1983-D and a 1955 wheat penny. I dont know much about values or what to look for due to being a beginner but so far im having alot of fun!

Could this effect possibly happen from a tilted die? Deeper on one side of the coin than the other.

Cliff,
hugeeyes
take a better look at the obverse at K-9, along the outer edge of the coin.

Re: 1984 strike error?
Thanks P, for taking the time to help me on this one. (I only hope I can retain it!)
In the second image, are you talking about the "second" rim?
(A Misaligned die is hard to tell without a reverse image.)
I do see a ridge ring between TRUST and the date.

Re: 1984 strike error?
Just a quick update on the 1984 Lincoln cent, upon further inspection i also found that it has a rotated die of 20 degrees. Not too sure if it is common or not but it is interesting.

Re: 1984 strike error?
I would say the 20° rotation, is "slightly significant"
:eureka:
I have found the easiest way to see these die rotations is to hold the coin up to a mirror. You can also snap pictures this way to, showing the rotated dies.
(Holding the coin with the obverse side towards you, straight up and down, and the reverse side in the mirror, will show you the degree of rotation)

Im not 100% certain it is exactly 20 degrees it could be more or less im not too sure im still trying to sort it out but looking at others online that are 20 degrees rotated mine looks to be about right
