1979 Proof set Error?

#1 Unread post by olbare »

Hi guys
Been awhile since I have been on here. I hope all is well.
I bought a 79 proof set, my first one.
I have several questions and possible mint error, you tell me what is and
is not.
Are Proof sets made to not open? So if someone opened this case it would be damaged. I'm asking, because of possible mint error if case cant be opened. There is some lint or dust particles inside the case. If it cant be opened, it should be sealed also, i would think.
For the possible mint error. On the half Dollar, below the neck line, between the MM and the W in we, there are 2 F's. To me they look just like the f in the initials on the reverse. If case cant be opened w/o damage, then they must be from mint. The case has no visible damage. I got my fingers crossed hoping I'm told the case is sealed at mint an can not be opened. Your knowledge and expertise is appreciated, what ever the coin is or is not!
I took photos with a pocket camera and was a decent place to shoot. I hope you can see them ok.

Thanks

Looks like this is a strike through but not sure what. Could be a contact mark but looks clean and rounded edges. It's not going to add any value I am afraid.

Glad to see you back posting!

Here is a closer up shot of the F's. To me they look like the F in the initials on reverse. Actually at differant angles, other F's are visible. so there are 3-4 maybe more. No extra value for something like this.

I have a few other coins I found along the way. I will post them later.

Is a Proof Set case made to not open?

Thank You

going by your images,.... these markings are 'incuse' (into) the coin,....
so, they may be a "contact mark", or "itty strike through", ... i would need it 'in hand' to give a 100% here.

 pics !

:eureka:
proof sets such as these should remain sealed,...
..... unless you decide to have a 'TPG' encapsulate them ...

That was my thought Paul. A mint worker dropped another coin onto this on. Looks like a reeded edge contact.

Thanks guys! That makes sense about the reeded edge, I can see that happening. The way they are positioned it possibly bounced, made contact more then once. I asked about case, because I bought the set on ebay. I was trying to rule out seller tampering.
You guys are awesome! A reeded edge contact never even entered my mind.

Thank You

These are sliding marks, shows motion, so I am not convinced these are from a reeded edge. Based on these last images they are contact marks of some kind.

Interesting for sure. Similar to but definitely not the designers initials.

My first thought was a reeded edge also but to have the same exact shape be produced on multiple areas on a coin from a reeded edge doesn't seem plausible. I also don't see a pressure ridge around the edge of the anomalies from PSD. And the production process is more careful to avoid PSD.

I'm wondering if it could have been a struck through metal where the metal may have been similar shape. (Maybe shavings of a reeded edge left over from a collar strike?)
Just my gotcoins: .
(ps. I love a good mystery!)
