1. Post a front and back image of your coin with a specific question about what you’re seeing or asking about and one coin per topic.
2. Please remove coin from the holder unless it’s US or an official mint case or unless it is graded by a grading service.
3. Images should be taken by a camera or cell phone camera, we ask that members don’t use images through a microscope screen.
4. Always start your own topic, please don’t ask about your coin or post your coin in someone else’s coin topic.
5. Do not send private messages about your coin unless an Admin ask you too and the same for sending emails through the board.
6. No spam. Do not post any links to your coin or other non-coin websites.
7. Always be respectful even if something makes you upset or you don’t agree with a member. You can always get a second opinion elsewhere. If you have an issue then politely ask an admin in an PM. PM’s are for issues, technical and personal, but not for coin questions (refer to number 5 on this list). Help with this 1981 cent
I’m hoping it’s ok to post asking for this type of help here, if not let me know if there’s a better place.
I’m pretty sure this coin has a different issue on both sides that don’t appear to be post mint damage.
My (uneducated) guess is the obverse is maybe has some type of defective lamination or planchet?
Also, I’m not sure how to reference the circular impression on the reverse, what exactly it is OR if either of the issues have anything to do with the other? Thanks again

Re: Help with this 1981 cent
Ok thanks. Do both sides look like they were exposed to the same type of damaging heat?
Here are some angled photos anyway. The edge iseems fairly intact when compared to the center and think some distortion is along the edge that doesn’t extend out to the surface. Thanks again!

Re: Help with this 1981 cent
The obverse looks like it might be caused by a corrosive substance that dissolved the copper. (PSD/PMD)
A question about the reverse though- Is the curved pattern in relief (raised) or incuse (recessed)?

Hmmm....Jevcreations wrote: ↑Thu Aug 23, 2018 5:15 pm Thanks for the input, the curvature mark on the reverse is raised
Have you tried soaking the coin in pure acetone to see if it comes off?
And can you post an image of the area between the top left corners of the building and the D of UNITED?
Also the bottom left of the building and the U of UNITED?
(It is probably nothing but there appears to be die damage in those areas.)
Thanks in advance.

Re: Help with this 1981 cent
Haven’t thought about soaking but I can. As crummy as the coin looks, it actually feels clean, so cleaning didn’t cross my mind.
I did slide a toothpick to feel along the raised areas and nothing budged as far as that goes.
Yes I will grab pictures of those areas you mentioned as well and possibly with a better camera.
Thanks so much again!

Since it is a copper planchet there won't be any plating blisters.Jevcreations wrote: ↑Fri Aug 24, 2018 12:12 am Haven’t thought about soaking but I can. As crummy as the coin looks, it actually feels clean, so cleaning didn’t cross my mind.

It will be interesting to see those images when you get the opportunity.

Re: Help with this 1981 cent
Ok so I am testing out a new imaging device that’s not working quite how I anticipated, however I think I’ve captured the top left area you mentioned. Will get the bottom area once the device is recharged. Hope I got the right area. And the surface sure is a lot rougher than imrealized.

Re: Help with this 1981 cent
The problem with using a scope you're going to see things that are called anomalies that are small and insignificant and damage that is going to play tricks on your untrained eye. No offense intended, just that I have a lifetime of studying coins.
Top that of with not understanding the minting process and the difference between damage and a mint error and you will get all kinds of confused.
The coin in the image is just damaged and usually when you can't find an example online then it is damage. Here's a video I did of some of the damaged coins I have collected over the years.

Re: Help with this 1981 cent
i have to agree 100% with D here,....
there is a real learning curve when using any type of magnifying device for coin inspection,....especially USB SCOPES.
:eureka:
this takes a some time to learn, as well as assimilating the ability to CORRECTLY IDENTIFY "what" you are actually seeing.
unfortunately, the "greed factor" has overcome the populous,.... & scope sales have boomed over the past 2 years !

Re: Help with this 1981 cent
Ok thanks again for the input, I posted the bottom photos below anyway.
Im actually an antique dealer and will use the scope for a variety of things like makers marks and stones, was just really hoping it would be good for this as well. None this less this has been an educational experience for me that will come in handy at estate auctions. My family and I have been filling coin books for over 10 years and I honestly never bothered to learn anything about “errors”. Thanks again.
Ops
