I've had quite a few of these as well and it always gets the heart pumping, for a second... Why does it always seem like it only happens to coins in beautiful condition? At least the coins I've seen have been exemplary, only to be worth face value.

This may seem silly to mention and correct but the correct term is "Doubled Die".

But if you think of a "Doubled Die" this way, it will help you think of the doubling being unique on each die which is then transferred to the coin (the coin will not be unique but it will be collectible, as an example of that particular die).
As a general rule that is what most collectors want for the coin to have much value.

Yes, Petes... doubled die or hub doubled (variety) is a much better term since it means the die itself it is doubled, doubling is machine doubling (strike doubling minor error) and double could be a multiple strike (mint error).

Important to note that a doubled die is actually a variety and not an error, it was a mistake but it was repeated exactly alike on a series of coins, where strike doubling or multiple strike is unique to a coin. In the case of multiple strikes it can effect more than one coin and actually combine them as the planchets are struck together, but this never happens exactly the same way each time and that's part of the definition of a mint error and not a variety.

Thanks Daniel.
The OP may be aware of the subtle difference of "doubled" but the more we mention it the more the proper term becomes remembered and used. (I have been guilty of the wrong terminology in the past and mention it whenever I can as a reminder to myself).
