I would have thought it too except the imaging of the star is too perfect to have been scraped. Id imagine a contact mark would leave the area image distorted.

Re: Ulysses S. Grant. $1 coin edge error
I dont know enough on the minting process for presidential dollars I have no clue if something like this is even possible. I would assume that when something comes in contact with a coin it probably wouldnt leave a mark looking this way. I would think that the image would be smeared or distorted not this clear showing multiple images of the star. The raised metal is the only real indication something may have Came in contact but whether it was when the star was being placed or after i have no clue..

This is probably one of the most difficult parts of a coin to photograph. Heres one more and this is probably the best I can do with the equipment I have.

The entire edge is struck at once so the entire edge would be effected, this was caused by the coin being gouged and is post mint damage.

Re: Ulysses S. Grant. $1 coin edge error
Thats the info I was looking for, wasn't sure if it was struck at once or ins some other fashion. After looking into it a bit more the other day and talking to some other people i had figured damage aswell. Anyway case closed. Thanks for responses.

I see what you are talking about with the shape of the star on the interior of the incuse area.Coinhunter91 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 08, 2018 6:00 pmThis is probably one of the most difficult parts of a coin to photograph. Heres one more and this is probably the best I can do with the equipment I have.
I'm a novice, but it looks like a type of slide MD on an incuse device.
Not sure how this could be possible while in the collar die unless it occurred precisely at the moment the collar die broke?
Edit: Just remembered the lettering is placed in a separate process than striking the planchet with the dies.
Still think it might be slide MD on an incuse device as the edge lettering is being struck.
