..... O.K., here is my take:

:eureka:
if we look at the 'posters' coin, we clearly see the "triangular markings" are INTO the coin, as evident by the disturbed/indented reverse rim,
......so possibly a 'part cancelled coin' ??

again, i need to see it first hand ..... hugeeyes

hugeeyes ...now if we view the error.ref image,.....
we see what appears to be "RAISED" triangular cancellation markings appearing predominantly on the "raised central devices" (specifically on the obverse in this example) .....

....so, using just these pics for now, i have to go with PMD here ... JMO
Raised (in relief?) cancellation marks on the Error-ref coin?
Light source is at K-6 producing shadows on the south side of raised areas/devices. Don't the triangles on the building have shadows on the south side indicating the triangles are sunken (incuse), not raised.
I must be misunderstanding something.

Understandable. Wish I had the capacity to multitask.
Interesting that the cancellation diamonds are a slightly different geometric design from each other.
Is this one you found?

Interesting because I have always wondered why the mint would need to cancel a coin. Must not have met their standards.

They cancel coins or now waffle coins that don't meet specifications to be melted and alloy reused.

Thanks Daniel. That definitely makes sense. With the billions of coins made each year, there must be a certain % that fail their quality control.
