1946 s penny with other image on reverse
I found a 1946 s penny that looks like it has the raised outline of a head and what looks like it might be some lettering on the reverse. I would be curious to see if anyone has any thoughts on it. Sorry the pictures aren't better but if it seems of interest I will take better ones with my scanner.

:welcome:
from your pic here,.... hugeeyes
:eureka:
these are what's called "GHOSTING",....very common on the LWC series.
this occurs as the 'die' becomes worn after thousands of 'hits',....
...& the 'obverse bust details' become faintly visible on the reverse ... JMO
Re: 1946 s penny with other image on reverse
if this is the case then I assume the coin isn't nearly as desirable as say a coin that was stamped over another coin? the image is however much more visible when viewed in person, it just jumps out at you. also, when I looked at it magnified there appears to be something printed that I couldn't account for. anyway, do you think it warrants further investigation?

These are more common than you think and only the uncirculated examples bring a premium. The exact term for this is indirect design transfer.

Correct, most mint errors are not valuable and it takes something dramatic to add the most value. You will see many minor errors on cents, dimes, nickels and quarters that don't add value.
Re: 1946 s penny with other image on reverse
thank you very much for your input. I will keep my eyes peeled for the big errors
