1856 1 Dollar gold type 3 Verticle 5, Filled die?

#1 Unread post by jjdigger »

Hello everyone, New guy here.

Recently purchased this coin for my collection, I noticed that the lettering on the Obverse looks like it is missing the I and C.
Is this normal wear for this coin or is it from a filled die?

It looks like it was struck through a grease filled die but close examination of that area would be in order.

Thanks you,
I will see if I can get some better pictures of the OBV tonight. I have noticed though after browsing the interweb that a lot of the Type 3 coins are missing details. Probably why the coin went through 3 design changes. Still a cool coin for my collection.

...& the "SOFTER" the metal,....the easier/quicker the die will 'plug'
