1997 p Washington Quarter HELP PLEASE

#1 Unread post by Jharden051215 » Wed Dec 20, 2017 6:49 pm

I found this in my grandpa's coins he gave me, the quarter (1997 p) is obviously different than a normal quarter. It is twice as thick as a normal coin, weighs 8.0g, slightly smaller than a normal quarter, I believe it may be a error but any advice or help would be great. Thanks in advance

I hope the pics will help
Pics are comparing to a nickel ,I was thinking maby wrong planchet many with a Canadian coin or something, or possibly two coins pressed together??

It is post mint damage but not sure why it weighs as much as it does unless it somehow acquired some metal from the tool used to tap the rim.

"Spooning" is a process of tapping the edge to shrink the coin's diameter without losing the images on the coin. Eventually this would be turned into a ring.

Yes, it is the process of moving metal into another shape.
