1948 d wheat penny with copper "collar"

#1 Unread post by george.heym »

Hello

My Grandfather gave me a bunch of wheaties around 40 yrs ago. They have been sitting in a box since then. I pulled them out the other day to show my kids and found something strange.

One of them, a 1948 d seems to have some kind of copper "collar" around it. I really know nothing about coins and don't know if this is some kind of error or if it was tampered with sometime in the past. I am attaching pictures of both sides so you can see what I am talking about.

Any information that you have on this

is appreciated.

Thanks,

That is neat but that was added after it left the mint since the mint never placed them in bezels.
Saw one recently on another forum with a similar year.

I agree, people have always had fun playing with coins and experimenting.

Thanks, that is what I assumed. Oddly, enough it is exactly the same size as a quarter. I will consider it a cool piece of "Americana".

The coolest part of this is that it really grabbed my kids' attention. They keep trying to figure out why and how someone would do this.

Thanks again for the quick replies and info.

Why someone would do this is a mystery. It could have been a failed attempt at creating jewelry or just to do something. I always thought covering a table top in pennies was interesting. I have seen a few things in this business and many are failed attempts at creating a fake mint error to add value and fool collectors.
