1952-S Lincoln Cent w/ Rim Issue
I know when the edge of the die has been compromised it usually leaves a ridge in the field near the perimeter. This coin has that, and the rim is altered as well. Am I correct in assuming the collar was damaged?

This is a collar die clash and is actually damage to the edge of the die from striking the top edge of the collar die, so when it strikes the coin it imparts this "edge" clash.

This is good info. I've seen this on other coins before but didn't know what might caused the imperfect/broken rim detail.
I love learning new "stuff". widegrin Thank you.

It's also referred to as a railroad rim when the collar die has reeding and you see this on dimes often.

Yes, I suppose due to the clash, the die metal was displaced away from where it needed to be to complete the rim.
