Not sure why there is a controversy. Your photo's make this pretty definitive!

Nice. Are you hinting that this could be die wear? Are all examples known have this metal flow? I have seen many anomalies on Buffalo Nickel dates myself, but curious if that is what you're hinting at?

Re: The 1914/3 Buffalo Nickel Overdate FS-101
Nice images of course.
And one more chiming in. Lots of die wear and age, but since you are pointing out areas on both sides of the coin my immediate thought was whether it might be marks from a clash? (Rotated or otherwise) I'm guessing this variety was established many moons ago and is thoroughly entrenched in the hobby, so there might be some resistance to to having it "demoted" if it isn't actually a true variety in the pure sense of the term.
And your thoughts Paul????
Added: Looking at the areas above and below the horizontal bar of the 4 where it crosses the vertical leg seems to show a slightly rounded area that would correspond to the lower part of a 3.

Re: The 1914/3 Buffalo Nickel Overdate FS-101
yea D, i see some 'die wear', as shown in the pics,.....
but i think there is also a 'strike/planchet' issue here also.
there is a slight clash/polish under the chin area, but the 'neck' area really looks like 'crummy flow' to me,..... :confused: :dunno :confused:
looking real close, as close as you can get through these 'slabs' (pic attached of this companies thickness), i do see the "upper 3 crossbar", along with a ever-so-slight polish job in the '4/3' area.
i have searched/looked at several sites on this var,.......& there is ALOT of controversy / skepticism for this FS-101 !!
i guess we need a S.E.M.1 image on this one ........ hugeeyes
S.E.M. = Scanning Electron Microscope

Nice. I found a couple 1935 and a 1937 and they both graded MS67.

Holy smokes. Can't imagine how the mint let them out like that!
Didn't they know they had a reputation to keep up?
