Hey guys, just signed up on this forum.
I found this quarter in some pocket change and was curious what others thought about the hump that is coming out of his throat and on the reverse side directly under the flame. Any thoughts appreciated!

Welcome and thanks for posting. Something like this really grabs your attention when you come across it. Not 100% sure but I found a dime with similar bubbling going on and the consensus was that it was caused by someone with a blowtorch heating it in that location causing the metal to expand on both sides.

Re: Bicentennial quarter weird hump
It would take a very quick jolt and extremely hot blast to do this to a coin.
Re: Bicentennial quarter weird hump
I don't think so either. A blow torch would do a lot more than bubble zinc and copper. It is something else. Maybe even a mint error.

Re: Bicentennial quarter weird hump
It's not a mint error. A welding arc can cause this bubble because a hot flash of high heat can expand any gas trapped between the clad layers. No part of the minting process will cause a bubble on both sides of a planchet like this, there is an occluded and intact gas bubble but this is not that and those happen on one side of the coin only.
