Small planchet
I found in my pocket change a 1981-P dime with the copper core about 1 mm smaller than the outside diameter of the dime. The copper-nickel clad top and bottom exterior is pressed slightly inwards with the process of putting the reeding on the outside edge. The copper core has very slight indentations on the edge from the reeding process. The outside reeded edge of the cladding matches the proper diameter of a dime. The planchet is perfectly centered. I have not seen any mention online of anything like it. I've seen smaller planchets stamped in larger coins, but nothing regarding a smaller planchet in the center of a dime. Everybody that I show this to usually scratch their heads and say that they haven't seen anything like it before in a dime. Somebody said that it probably was a forgery. Who would go through the effort to make a forgery of a dime and then put it into circulation? Anybody have any thoughts or comments? Looking for some help here.

Re: Small planchet
Thanks for the 'Welcome'. I'll try to take a photo and post it. That may be as challenging as finding the dime in the first place. Yuk, yuk, yuk! I'll give it a try.

I see this gentleman never found his dime. I happen to have one and have no idea what really happened to it.

RobC,
Please consider putting your question in a separate thread. Otherwise, but is easily missed.
Looking at your edge shots, not sure what you consider wrong? Looks like a clad dime, but obverse and reverse photos would help.

Re: Small planchet
Mark, I believe he is saying it looks like a "wheel" that would run on a track. The copper core does NOT extend out to the clad layer.
Can the Op provide images of the front and back to look for clues?
Also this is where a measurement on the diameter would be helpful to see if it meets mint tolerances. The first two images seem to show some separation starting between the copper and clad layer (thin dark line between the two).

Re: Small planchet
This is post mint damage from a bezel or someone using a file around the edge; during the minting process only certain things can happen during the minting process to the edge of a coin. None of these result in the edge of the coin looking like this.
