Congratulations Scubaredneck. :winnah: Great pics Paul. Shows some very neat features.
I'm going to venture a guess since I'm not familiar with this type error-
Double struck as opposed to DDR? (And Double struck and mechanical doubling are different also, correct?)

yes, double 'struck'...i also see the 'rim line' there, suspecting a slight part/worn? collar.
SRN said i could 'open' the flips, so i think i should put the calipers on it?

the obv date area rim 'looks' PMD, but is not.... i think there are collar issues in other places also, as i see some other 'funky' non-pmd rim areas as well.

sorry SRN, am working on a '42 WQ i bought...so i WILL get to your em's.

I think this looks double struck, but the coin only moved a little out of place, but there can't be any mirror images of any letters or numbers. It's interesting since this looks like an extreme case of strike doubling as well.

d,
i said 'double struck', just to make sure no one thought 'doubled die'.
as this was explained to me...from a 1930 lincoln cent i have just like this one....
that this is extreme "eject doubling"..... where the just struck planchet, "bounces", very hard, just as the hammer die begins to 'retract'....hitting the die again, strong enough to make the design impression again on the coin.....as so i was told. i've seen "eject doubling" often, but rarely this severe.

Yes, I see and agree, this would be ejection doubling. It is a nice find since I haven't seen it like this either.

I came across this thread again and understand this was determined to be extreme eject doubling.
I was wondering, from images 5&6, if that is extra metal on the RCA of AMERICA?
The top of the R & C look "folded/twisted" and part of the A actually looks lifted off the surface of the coin and almost like you might be able to see under the high part.
(And no I'm not suffering from a "high" of fun summer time Umbrella type drinks! lol: )

Thanks for any insight to a new question on this old thread.

Thanks Paul.
It certainly is a weird one with the metal on so many letters getting pulled away from the coins surface. It even appears to be happening on STATES.

Maybe a light coating of grease or oil in the recesses of the die created a suction that kept the coin from separating from the die properly, causing the flowing metal to be distorted as the suction was released. Liquids usually act as a lubricant, but occasionally can create suction. Similar to a pair of stackable cups from the dishwasher put together before they dry. Lots of suction is created trying to separate them.
(And yes the left side of my brain, the "Creative" side, is overactive today!! lol: )
