2012 Shield Cent Error Identification
Hello,
I found the following 2012 Shield cent that has some type of error, I am not sure what it would be classified as. I know it is not damaged due to the fact in the affected areas, the letters/numbers have the details they should have. And besides the affected areas, the coin would be a mint state coin.
Thanks

Re: 2012 Shield Cent Error Identification
Wouldn't details be missing from the letters if it was damaged? Going back and looking at the coin under a x10 jewelers loupe, there's nothing that would say someone hit this with a hammer or anything. I could be wrong, I just don't think certain details would still exist if someone hit it with a hammer or something, and there would be more damage around the affected areas and it wouldn't be as clean.

Here's an image with a closer up of the letting. Photo was taking using a scope that only goes to x10, I have medical reasons why I have a scope.

I can't get a good read on the obverse with the images you posted ......
But your last image here,… Sort of looks like a surface contaminant…?

Hi Paul,
I can get a clearer image of the obverse shortly. I have an interview for a software developer position in a little while, if I get the job it will be my first non-internship related development job.

Here are some more images which may be better for the obverse:

Thanks,
Unfortunately, imaging these "Straight On" with a slight overexposure that you're having in your images… Doesn't make it possible to diagnose what's going on..... For this particular type of situation.
Try snapping some images at an 40° angle, With the light source away from you.

Okay I will. I just need to finish rolling up a bunch of pennies I have on my desk. When I got through them I put the discards in a PCGS box, and when that fills up I roll more. It's part of a process I use that seems to work.

I can't say what is going on here either, but usually when both sides are effects it's PMD. However, I am just guessing at this point.

Re: 2012 Shield Cent Error Identification
That's a bit better......... but your light source needs to be at more of steeper angle, and you may have to adjust your imaging device as the images still look washed out…
Can you feel if it's something on the surface?
Try lighting & angles such as my example posted here, remember my hint about "Shadow Casting"
