Proof 1988-S silver eagle different thickness, discoloration on edge possible misalignment
Hello to all, I need help with figuring out what’s going on with this 88-S proof silver eagle I have. There’s no reason to believe it’s a counterfeit and I have the original box and case as well as COA for it and there is nothing noticeably out of the ordinary until you really begin to look at it and examine it. Around the lower left rim on the obverse side from about the 8:00 to just about the 12:00 position you can see the rim is not normal. When you look at the reverse you see the same thing from the 6:00 to about the 10:00 position on the rim. Now flipping the coin to the side and observing it’s edge you can clearly make out a difference in thickness as well as some discoloration. Can anyone tell me what’s going on with the coin ? Thanks ahead of time
Also the coin weighs in at roughly 31.62 grams

Re: Proof 1988-S silver eagle possible error?
Can you measure the thickness with a caliper ? If it was , and this is my own opinion, a tapered planchet error then it would affect both sides of the coin. This is where I'm confused .

I am by no means expert when it comes to ASE, with said it almost looks like a parcel collar clash. Looking forward to the ASE people.

I will get you the measurements with in the next couple of days as I am stuck at work away from it right now. Maybe I didn’t explain what I am seeing correctly so I will also get some more pictures up as well for everyone to get a better idea of what I am trying to explain
Re: Proof 1988-S silver eagle possible error?
i dont know but i love the blue hue. very calming. lol
Re: Proof 1988-S silver eagle possible error?
So I began researching the collar clash and it definitely looks to be what I am trying to describe and show in my pictures. I will get some measurements as well as upload more pictures as soon as I get a chance
Re: Proof 1988-S silver eagle possible error?
Lol I didn’t realize it had a hue but more than likely it’s from the lighting and gloves I am using as it doesn’t appear to have that hue in person only in the pictures

Excellent images.....
I see some discoloration on the reading across the area that is oversized..... I have no idea what that is....... possibly excessive heat from the strike?
May be a "Finned Rim" hit?.... Remember we are using images to diagnose this.....D

Thank you! I definitely was trying to capture the best images possible as I know it’s difficult and sometimes impossible to explain what You are asking as well as capture what you are seeing in person with a camera lens
