any ideas on this 1934?

#1 Unread post by bigphish68 »

I have never seen anything quite like this. It is a 1934 Lincoln that is razor thin and is completely missing its rim. I am open to any ideas. I have several photos and a side by side comparison to show thickness of coin.

I'd love to jump on the wrong planchet idea, but can't think of any smaller than the cent other than a dime. And, that won't work. So, I'm left with an altered coin.

I've got to agree with M.
Probably dissolved in some type of caustic substance (Acid?).
Notice how the fields near the perimeter have a rippled look to it. It dissolves all the copper surfaces at a fairly even rate but usually leaves that rippled look.

It is a science experiment and usually acid is used to slowly dissolve the copper.

Ferric Chloride disolves copper.

It is used to etch circuit boards. I still have a couple of bottles from years ago.
