1988 - P Lincoln Cent Error or PMD

#1 Unread post by finalfantasy »

I am not sure but there appears to be some type of bubbled extra strike on the top area of the obverse near the "In God We Trust". However, this could be due to a coin machine causing this damage but I am not sure.

Thanks
Chris

This is more than likely a plating issue where the copper plating didn't properly adhere to the surface of the zinc planchet and during the strike the heat caused expansion of the gas in between. If you can poke a hole in it with a tooth pick then that's what this is.

If you can't poke a hole then it could be some type of die transfer caused by die wear and excessive use. It's commonly found by collectors who search a bunch of coins.

Yea I tried the toothpick test and proved it is in fact PMD after all. I bet this coin was somewhere very hot. Thanks again, Daniel.

I didn't say post mint damage or PMD, it happened during the minting process but it's not valuable.
