You Must be Aware of Label Play

#1 Unread post by Paul »

do you know what you are buying?.....most do not these days!
just from watching the 'coin sales' on these web-sites, i see quite a bit of,.......i don't know how to say it,....without sounding like a jerk,....so i'll say "trickery", to sell you a coin.

when you buy 'error coins', it's important you understand what all the confusing #'s they use to identify that "variety".

you will find, the more you 'learn' about these coins, the less 'very costly mistakes' you will be makeing.
if you search through the "cataloged listings" that are published, you will find, there can be several of the 'same type' of error,...for the 'same date/mintmark'. here-in lies the mistake most make.....where one of these demands a big premium, & the other(s), don't see much of an increase in 'premium value'.

just as an example here, i'll use the 1944 D/S lincoln cent. some companies allow you to not disclose the 'variety #' on the 'label'....which makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN VALUE HERE. i always 'ask these sellers' simple, basic questions....like, "is this coin the 501 or 502 over-mintmark"?
:eureka:
the answers i get:
'what's the difference anyway'
'it's a rare mis-striked coin'
'what's a 501 or 502'
'it's the over-punched mintmark'
'it's a rare rpm'

honestly, i know they do not know the difference. i just like reading the 'responses'...that's bad, i know!
my favorite responses are.... "it's a rare error certified by xyz" ....because they have (or had) noooooo idea, they might now...after they "learned" what it was....& of course, are 'flipping" it to the next unknowing..."under-educated" buyer....maybe, possibly, most likely? :dunno

but, as you have seen my posts before, 'someone' will happen along & buy it for a crazy price :s

Paul is right. They pass off minor 1955 penny DDs as the real deal, and 1972 Penny DDs the same. The minor double dies are worth maybe a couple of bucks. These dealers are not actually telling a lie, but they are misrepresenting what they are selling as the valuable pieces. Do not buy without checking somewhere, and those of us here will gladly help you sort out the truth from the bull.
