1. Post a front and back image of your coin with a specific question about what you’re seeing or asking about and one coin per topic.
2. Please remove coin from the holder unless it’s US or an official mint case or unless it is graded by a grading service.
3. Images should be taken by a camera or cell phone camera, we ask that members don’t use images through a microscope screen.
4. Always start your own topic, please don’t ask about your coin or post your coin in someone else’s coin topic.
5. Do not send private messages about your coin unless an Admin ask you too and the same for sending emails through the board.
6. No spam. Do not post any links to your coin or other non-coin websites.
7. Always be respectful even if something makes you upset or you don’t agree with a member. You can always get a second opinion elsewhere. If you have an issue then politely ask an admin in an PM. Re: 1857-fec-clash
my latest FEC mule clash...
now, these pics look like :s , because of the imaging equipment i use. it picks up EVERYTHING on the coin! dirt, grime, fluff, every itty bitty nick,... so on. so when you see these ORIGINAL DIRTY UN-CLEANED full coin pics, you think it is junk!....because you are so used to seeing scrubbed clean, possibly polished, lightly brushed, photoshopped, colorized,...........smaller, crummier, images of coins on-line. & these are the ones everyone buys & pays the most for, because they 'look pretty', & 'prettiest coin always wins'. why? this is just what you have taught yourself. &, the 'flippers' out there are buying decent quality dirty coins, cleaning them up to, 'picture better', & re-selling, "flipping" them, and are destroying quality coins in staggering numbers now days. to make money. period. sad, but true. if you pay attention to the popular auction sites, they are, or have become, just a "merry-go-round" of flippers. sad, but true. but, i digress......
this S7, FS-01-1857-403, obverse clashed with a $20 gold peice, is, by far,.... the nicest, early die state specimen i have ever seen. this one BLOWS AWAY the nicest/finest one i currently own!! this one was stored for years in a whitman cardboard album, as evident by the surface characteristics viewed under a high power microscope. it's kinda dirty, & there is no corrosion, it certainly looks that way, but is a spotty dark toning from the album, on the coin edges & reverse.

Re: 1857-fec-clash
So how exactly does this happen? This type of error requires:
1) Loading an FEC obverse and 50c reverse die into the same coin press - very different sized dies, I would suppose.
2) The press striking with no planchet to create the die clash and
3) Reinstalling the proper reverse die into the press AND THEN striking several FECs.
This almost seems like something done intentionally by some mint employee back in the day. Or maybe it was an OOPS!! and he fixed it by quickly switching out the reverse dies and hoping no one would notice? Is there some sort of story about how it occurred?
