6. No spam. Do not post any links to your coin or other non-coin websites.
7. Always be respectful even if something makes you upset or you don’t agree with a member. You can always get a second opinion elsewhere. If you have an issue then politely ask an admin in an PM. PM’s are for issues, technical and personal, but not for coin questions (refer to number 5 on this list). 1868 nickel-var5
JUST GOT THIS COIN OFF EBAY--1868-VARIETY 5--WHAT DO YOU THINK--on variety 5 the point on the star points to the 2nd S in states--variety 5 has no broken letters--

Mike, It's definitely a Variety Coin but why did you say " No Broken Letters " and then point to letters you say are broken ? :confused: If anything, it's a VARIETY 4 but the C isn't broken and the others are too worn to make out .
I'm still up in the air about the Variety still . It looks cleaned based on the fact that it is " Grainy " looking .Also, the "C" in Cents doesn't look right . The lower portion " Serif " is too fat . The weak "S" in STATES looks "fishy" also . I'm wondering if this was Altered in some way . There are a lot of Fakes out there, especially this one in which there are only 29,000 of the 2,900,000 Variety 1868's .
Lets see what the others think . I hope it wasn't too much if it isn't a Variety 5 . I still think :yourock: if that helps any .

I am suspicious of the grainy sand blasted look of that coin. It is possible that the lighting does not do it justice, but it may have an altered surface.

Yeah it has an altered surface or cleaned, but can anyone find this in the CPG or another source?

I've studies these Variety Coins as much as the book has to offer . The problem here is that the "C" looks too fat, Also, The "D" as well as the "S" are worn to where it's hard to see if their Complete or have missing pieces . Then like we all agree, the Coin has been cleaned and possibly Altered .
This really sucks, I wish I had the Coin to look at .
I own a Variety 3 " Raw" ( accidently sold as a normal 1868 ) and a Variety 5 that is Authenticated and Graded , so I've done a lot of research after I realized I had a Variety by accident . The seller still sells Error and Variety Coins at normal prices. So, I don't know if he's not an Error Coin guy or just has so many Coins, he just wants to sell without scrutinizing each one . Each time I visit his site, he has at least 1,000 Coins for sale . :dunno

Is the weight right? Does have that grainy look as seen on a lot of fakes.Not saying this is ,but?
